How to Make a Professional Headshot

You do not need a studio to get a great headshot. With decent light, a camera at eye level and the right wardrobe, you can capture a professional photo at home — then use an AI headshot generator to finish the job in minutes.

Quick clarification: FaceFig is not FaceRig. FaceFig is a cloud AI portrait / headshot generator that turns your photo into professional business portraits. FaceRig is unrelated real-time webcam VTuber avatar software.

Step 1. Use soft, even light

Sit or stand facing a window on a bright (not harsh mid-day) is best. Soft window light flattens shadows and avoids the harsh lighting that makes photos look amateur. Avoid a bare bulb directly overhead.

Step 2. Frame at eye level

Place your camera or phone at eye level — a stack of books or a tripod works. Shoot head to mid-chest, leave a little room above your head, and keep your chin in line with the frame. Eyes toward the lens.

Step 3. Dress & background

Wear a solid, tailored top in a color that contrasts with the background (navy against a light wall, for example). Keep the background clean and uncluttered.

  • Avoid busy patterns, logos and pure white-on-white.
  • For formal headshots, add a blazer or suit jacket.

Step 4. Pose & expression

Face the light source, keep both eyes open and relaxed. A slight, natural smile reads more approachable than a forced grin. Take lots of shots; the best is usually later.

Step 5. Edit or let AI finish it

Tip: upload a clear, front-facing photo with your face fully visible and good light — no heavy filters or sunglasses. Then use an AI headshot generator to create polished, studio-style results in multiple outfits.
